Back to school time!

School is coming quickly and the backpacks are going on sale! We went to pottery barn kids to get ours today. We are still in the lower grades, so there isn’t that much that goes into a backpack , just yet. (So, we can still buy those cute backpacks.) I like Pottery Barn’s backpacks because they have padded straps, and a fastener for across the chest. They also have different sizes so we can buy one that doesn’t hang below my daughter’s waist. If you have an older child that carries heavy books, you may want to consider ordering an ergonomic backpack with a lumbar cushion. Also keep in mind the weight of the backpack should be no more than 15% of their body weight.
Enjoy your back to school shopping and be mindful of your child’s spine and therefore their health!

“Does your child get splitting headaches? Dr. Nancy Elwartowski is using chiropractic to help stop headaches, without the use of pain killers”

Headache

Don't let your child suffer any longer.

According to the American Chiropractic Association, nine out of ten Americans suffer from headaches. Dr. Nancy Elwartowski, a local Carmel, IN. chiropractor, is using chiropractic to successfully stop migraine headaches in hundreds of pediatric and adult patients who previously had little help from traditional medicine.

“Many of my patients felt like there was no hope for them,” says Dr. Nancy. “There is a large segment of our population who suffer silently with headache pain almost every day. They often turn to pain killers to temporarily stop the pain. But drugs only provide short term relief, it doesn’t fix the core problem at hand. We are using chiropractic to fix the source of the migraines and we are having excellent results.”

Is there evidence that chiropractic can stop headache pain? New research shows that spinal manipulation – the primary form of care provided by doctors of chiropractic – may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck.

A report released in 2001 by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than a commonly prescribed medication.

Dr. Elwartowski says that in recent years the medical community has embraced chiropractic because it offers treatment without the use of drugs or surgery. “In treating headache pain, most experts agree that conservative care should be tried before more invasive treatments are considered. That’s what chiropractic offers. It has a long history of effectively stopping pain yet doesn’t require the use of prescription or over the counter painkillers that can have negative consequences. Chiropractic is all-natural and frequently is more affordable than other options. We say why suffer when you don’t have to? We invite people to come on down and explore if chiropractic might work for them.”

Chiropractic is Safe for Kids !

“Phase 1 of the ICPA research was a colleciton of date from both doctors and parents. In over 10,000 visits, only a handful of children were recorded as even having minor discomfort or fussiness post adjustment. Even more exciting was teh unanticipated improvements reported above and beyond their initial reason for care. Parents recorded improvements in their children’s sleep, behavior and attitude.”
Dr. Nancy Says… how many research compilations on medication can say the same thing??

Back Pack Safety

back pack and posture

back pack and posture

I recently did a back pack safety talk at my daughter’s preschool. I figured this was a great age to start talking to them about their back packs, since they will be entering kindergarten this fall.  We all see these teeny tiny kids and these HUGE backpacks, wandering the streets. I have a couple tips to share to help prevent spinal problems caused by the size and weight of their backpacks.  First of all, the contents should not be more than 15% of their body weight.  So, for a 100 lb child, that means no more than 15 pounds.  Also, they should wear both shoulder straps and have it resting about the waistline. NOT below the waste as low as the hips.  They should also pack it with the heaviest books closest to their spine.

We offer back pack screenings at no charge in our office. For more information, feel free to email me at drnancy@kids-chiropractor.com or go to our website www.kids-chiropractor.com

Fevers

With winter approaching I see many little ones in my practice with coughs and ear infections.  One of the biggest concerns I hear from parents is that their child has a fever and I tell them GREAT ! I get some pretty funny looks, but I know when my daughter has a fever it makes me happy! Now you are giving me one of those looks…but, a fever will save you money in doctor’s visits and antibiotics!  A fever is the bodies way of fighting off a virus or bacteria.  When your body is able to take care of whatever is attacking it, it only makes our immune systems stronger !  So before you reach for the tyelenol, let the fever run it’s course! Give plenty of fluids, try to get some food in them, put a warm cloth on their wrists and back of the neck. If they are really lethargic and just not acting right, then call their doctor.

Swimming Pool

I was relaxing next to the swimming pool this past week watching my daughter splashing around and found myself looking around the pool at the kids walking around the pool deck.  As a chiropractor, I find myself looking at postures alot in my spare time.  When someone is in a bathing suit you can really see the postures well. Alot of Myofascial therapists have you come to your session in a bathing suit, so they can see your posture.  So, I am looking at all these crooked little spines, thinking their parents just don’t know!  When I see an adult patient that has degeneration(arthritis) at 20-30 years old, I always ask if there were any serious injuries as a child. Most can’t come up with anything. But, as I look at these crooked little spines, I see future adult patients, because that is when people think going to a chiropractor is normal.  But, if I could get these kids in my office at this age, we could prevent the future appointment where I ask them what trauma they had as a kid that is causing this arthritis in their low back.  You see, if a joint is out of alignment for a prolonged period of time, the disc starts wearing down and your bones start forming spurs. What your body is trying to do is to connect to the bone below it to stabilize itself.  We call this arthritis. So, as you are sitting around the pool, look and see if your child’s spine goes straight up or does it seem to lean a bit to one side. Are their shoulders level? You will be amazed at what you see, if you start looking at your child’s posture.  You have all seen cases of severe scoliosis, which is pretty easy to see, but what I am talking about is very subtle.  Look at your kids a little differently and if they do have some subtle posture changes, get them to a chiropractor now!

Ear Infections!

You are at your witts end, you have searched all the remedies on the internet and you feel helpless!  Somewhere online you read about chiropractic care helping ear infections.  I just wanted to explain a little bit about what I find in my office and how I treat children with ear infections.

There are many reasons that an ear infection can come on in an infant or child. No two children are the same, but there are some common denominators that I have found over the years of treating children.  The two main things are a mechanical and/or milk sensitivity.  What I mean about mechanical is; the biomechanics of the spine or cranium is altered and fluid can not drain.  This usually occurs at the base of the skull or behind the eyes to the ears.  Look at your child’s eyes and to see if one looks larger than the other, does one eyebrow look higher than the other, do they prefer to turn their head one way verses the other, is their head tilted a bit or are the muscles at the base of the skull tight?  These are just two common things that occur that a parent can see for themselves.  Obviously, there is more to it, but you as a parent may be able to tell if there might be a mechanical component involved.
When I meet with the parents of a child experiencing ear infections, I look at many things, including what the child is eating along with  biomechanics, as well as their environment. (daycare, exposed to second hand smoke, etc)  Then I thoroughly discuss what I find and what we can do about it, naturally.  The treatment I use is myofascial release, cranial sacral work and maybe some very gentle spinal adjusting depending on the response to the first two techniques.

I was working on a 18 month old today that did sign language and while I was performing his treatment at one point he would push my hand away, then a few seconds later he would do the “more” sign with his hands, then I would return to what I was doing  We did this several times until I felt we were done. So, he was able to communicate with me and actually enjoyed his treatment. ( I let the little ones get away with telling me what to do.)

As chiropractors, we look to cause of disease.
