According to the American Chiropractic Association, nine out of ten Americans suffer from headaches. Dr. Nancy Elwartowski, a local Carmel, IN. chiropractor, is using chiropractic to successfully stop migraine headaches in hundreds of pediatric and adult patients who previously had little help from traditional medicine.
“Many of my patients felt like there was no hope for them,” says Dr. Nancy. “There is a large segment of our population who suffer silently with headache pain almost every day. They often turn to pain killers to temporarily stop the pain. But drugs only provide short term relief, it doesn’t fix the core problem at hand. We are using chiropractic to fix the source of the migraines and we are having excellent results.”
Is there evidence that chiropractic can stop headache pain? New research shows that spinal manipulation – the primary form of care provided by doctors of chiropractic – may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck.
A report released in 2001 by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than a commonly prescribed medication.
Dr. Elwartowski says that in recent years the medical community has embraced chiropractic because it offers treatment without the use of drugs or surgery. “In treating headache pain, most experts agree that conservative care should be tried before more invasive treatments are considered. That’s what chiropractic offers. It has a long history of effectively stopping pain yet doesn’t require the use of prescription or over the counter painkillers that can have negative consequences. Chiropractic is all-natural and frequently is more affordable than other options. We say why suffer when you don’t have to? We invite people to come on down and explore if chiropractic might work for them.”

I recently did a back pack safety talk at my daughter’s preschool. I figured this was a great age to start talking to them about their back packs, since they will be entering kindergarten this fall. We all see these teeny tiny kids and these HUGE backpacks, wandering the streets. I have a couple tips to share to help prevent spinal problems caused by the size and weight of their backpacks. First of all, the contents should not be more than 15% of their body weight. So, for a 100 lb child, that means no more than 15 pounds. Also, they should wear both shoulder straps and have it resting about the waistline. NOT below the waste as low as the hips. They should also pack it with the heaviest books closest to their spine.
We offer back pack screenings at no charge in our office. For more information, feel free to email me at drnancy@kids-chiropractor.com or go to our website www.kids-chiropractor.com

Welcoming your new baby into your home can be a wonderful, scary and helpless situation. If this is your first baby, you know what I mean. There are some things you can do to help your child be healthy. These are some of the things I have seen over the years and want to share them with you.
First of all, have your infant’s spine checked immediately! Not only can birth be traumatic to the spine, while they were in utero, there could have been some constraint that may have caused some imbalances in their spine. If your labor was induced, had a posterior baby, forceps, vacuum, c-section or breech baby…then definately have their spines checked. The nervous system is protected by the spine and cranium, if there is any intereference from the spine on these nerves, then there could be potential health problems. Babies don’t tell you they are in pain, and they may not be in pain…but there could be interference affecting their function. We see it in our office as ear infections, spitting up, colic, sleeplessness and just irritability.
Secondly, breast feed as long as possible. It is very important to their growth and nourishment. There is so much research out there to support breastfeeding and how it affects the baby. I just read today, that the children that are breastfed longer have a higher IQ. If you are not able to breast feed, contact a leleche club and get some help. If you are breastfeeding and you notice your child spitting up, becoming colicky, crying alot, then take dairy out of your diet and see what happens.
The third thing, don’t be too quick to get your little one up on their feet walking. We have all heard how important it is for a child to crawl, there is alot of truth to it! There is a natural succession of how the nervous system develops and crawling is very important. Crawling should be done for at least three months, ideally six months!
These are just three things I think every new mom should know. I will add more in another post! Have a happy and healthy day!
